A Seattle Houseboat Where Vintage and Contemporary Furniture Meet

Earlier this spring, Keeps partnered with Seattle vintage furniture gallery In The Comfort Of on a special staging project unlike any we've worked on before.

The setting was a beautifully preserved 1950s Portage Bay houseboat designed by architect Gerald Van Slyck. A floating home filled with character, history, and incredible views of the water.

The goal was simple: create an interior that blended vintage and contemporary furniture so naturally that it felt as though every piece had always belonged there.

The living room was anchored by a rare 1950s modular sofa system by Martin Borenstein, paired with Studio Tenjung's LIWU yak wool rug. Together, the pieces created a warm and inviting space that celebrated the home's mid-century roots while feeling completely current.

For the open-concept bedroom, In The Comfort Of selected the Keeps Architect Bed and matching Keeps nightstands in our warm Honey finish. The solid oak furniture introduced warmth and simplicity to the space while complementing the rich textures and craftsmanship of the vintage furnishings surrounding it.

The sleeping area was completed with a pair of 1960s Lampette task lamps, Studio Tenjung's CHECKMATE Tibetan wool rug, and a thoughtfully chosen 1950s block print depicting the nearby 520 Bridge spanning Portage Bay.

Projects like this remind us that good furniture transcends eras. Thoughtfully made pieces—whether they were crafted seventy years ago or last month—can coexist beautifully when they're chosen with intention.

A huge thank you to In The Comfort Of for inviting us into this special project and for their impeccable eye for curation. We're thrilled to see the Architect Bed at home among such iconic vintage design.

We're still daydreaming about floating away in this perfect little houseboat.
